Tuesday, October 18th was supposed to be a routine checkup at the doctor’s office and ended up being Ellie’s birthday. It’s just so strange to me that every one of my crew’s birth stories begin the same way…as a routine checkup visit.
During the doctor’s visit, I had about 3-4 contractions within a 20 minute visit, and Dr. Hutchinson said he wanted to send me upstairs at the hospital next door so they could monitor my contractions. I was very lucky that my Mom said she wanted to come to my doctor’s appointment and at the last minute decided to bring the boys with us. When I got to the hospital, they were waiting for me and had everything ready. The nurse hooked me up to the monitors and kept on saying that I would probably just go home because I was only 36 weeks and that baby needed to stay in longer. Well Ellie had other plans. My contractions were again 3-5 minutes apart and after a couple of hours I had dilated from a 2 to a 4, so they decided to give me brethine to try and stop the contractions. It worked for about 20 minutes and then the contractions started coming again. A couple of hours later they tried the brethine again, but to no avail. Ellie just wanted to meet her family…and soon! :) I called Shaun at work and told him the deal and he came to the hospital around lunchtime. He stayed for a bit, then took the boys home…and took a shower just in case Ellie were to come. I called him at home and told him it would be about 7:30 before anything would happen. Dr. Hutchinson was supposed to have a meeting downtown at 4:30, but decided not to go and went ahead and made preparations to have the C-section at 5:15. I hurried and called Shaun and told him to come to the hospital NOW! He got there just in time to put on the scrubs and head to the OR with me. My grandparents were in the waiting room and hallway, along with my Mom, Mic-Mic, Jenny and Hunter. Everything for the most part went really smoothly. Shaun gave me a priesthood blessing and I was at peace… which I hadn’t felt so much the last few weeks of my pregnancy. I hadn’t wanted to have a C-section at all, so this was definitely the Lord calming my heart.
The C-section went well. I started feeling really nauseated after they gave me the spinal and I remember telling the nurse that I needed a bag or something so I didn’t throw up all over her :) Everything else went smoothly. Shaun was right by my head…he didn’t want to see ANYTHING! And as I teared up when I heard Ellie’s first cry, I asked Shaun to wipe my eyes, and he did, along with all of my mascara…right there on the operating table, I had to teach him how to wipe under my eyes, so as not to smear black all over my face…
Ellie was born at 5:37 with a head full of dark hair. I got so emotional when I heard her first cry. As I was laying there on the operating table, waiting for the doctors to finish everything up, my mind went straight to how the boys are going to react to their baby sister. I couldn’t wait to get to my room and hear their conversations. And all of my expectations were exceeded! They couldn’t wait to see her…except Carson, who was a little skeptical. I was in my room for over an hour before anyone could come in and when they did, they wanted to hold her and had a million questions as to what went on. Spencer is still asking a million questions! I felt so blessed and still do!
Here’s some pictures…
The boys getting their science lesson in for the day watching the nurse put my IV in…I just wish they hadn’t seen the pool of blood on the floor from where she couldn’t get the blood to stop flowing.
Right before we went back to have our baby girl
My favorite…daddy’s heart already!
Ellie is so loved!
thank you Jenny!!
Hospital food never tasted so good…my first solid meal after 2days
The boys wanted to bring me flowers…how sweet!
And I see they wrote they love Ellie. I told them I was going to have them wear “I LOVE ELLIE” t-shirts at the hospital…so I guess they thought this would work out just as good. Spencer said he wouldn’t wear the t-shirt anyways if it said that, because he would be embarrassed. Is he already old enough to be embarrassed by something their mom makes them do?? :)
More love for Ellie! :)
definition of chubby cheeks: Ellie
Ellie’s hair is like a porcupine…sticking straight up and there’s no taming it…and it is STILL like that a month later!
Let’s go home!
This C-section was like night and day from Carson’s birth. Instead of 4 days at at the hospital, we only stayed 2 days and I was up walking almost right after the spinal wore off. I am so grateful this recovery has been as good as it has. And the boys have been such big helpers around the house…and with Ellie! Almost too helpful at times!
It is almost surreal to me that I have another baby…and a girl at that! I came home a mother of 4, and am absolutely loving it!! Here’s a few pictures of our arrival home and all the sweet decorations my mom and the boys had made for us.

Thanks for sharing your story. I'll have to get by soon--trying to get over this cough for now. Take care!
Thank you for the stories and pictures! I love your family!
CONGRATULATIONS!!! LOVE her...She looks like she is the sweetest little girl! I know her big brothers will take great care of her (and you!). :)
I loved reading Ellie's birth story - thanks for posting it! She is absolutely gorgeous and I do love her "porcupine" hair :-) I think you are going to have a great time - you were wise to put a little distance between the older kids and the baby. It will really help your sanity!! (I know, because I'm losing mine...)
